I was thinking about all the great Christmas memories I have from my childhood... and how I want my kids to have those same kinds of memories and realized maybe I need to be a little more thoughtful about what made it so great... hence, this week I'm going to devote a blog entry/day to favorite Christmas memories...
I grew-up mostly amongst my mom's family (and that does seem to be the way, doesn't it?). We had A-mazing family parties. I mean, people were crying at most of them, but only because we were laughing so hard. When I was little we did a gift exchange amongst cousins but as we all got older we changed to a while elephant style party and some of those gifts are STILL famous!
I think that's something I miss most about living so far from family. We don't have as many people who know our kids from birth, who know how to really "get" them and still they know they love them.
It's always hard around the holidays. Luckily, we have adopted a lot of people here, and even though some we don't know for long I'm grateful for the impact SO many people have on our kids. We are truly blessed in that area.
So, what do you do in lieu of family parties if you're "alone" in the world. Or do you still get together with your family? In hindsight the parties may not have been as great for the adults as they were for the kids, but I have a sneaking suspicion they all loved it as much as we did. :)
